The New Contract Last updated: 27/05/2026

This policy explains how The New Contract collects, uses and protects your personal data. It applies to information we collect through our website at thenewcontract.org, our email communications, and any other interactions you have with us.

The New Contract is the data controller for the information described in this policy. If you have any questions, please contact us at info@thenewcontract.org.

1. How we collect information about you

(a) When you give it to us directly

You may give us your personal data when you sign up to receive our emails, contact us by phone, email or post, apply for employment or to volunteer with us, or otherwise correspond with us. Our signup forms make clear what you are consenting to receive.

(b) When you give it to us indirectly
We may receive information about you when you follow us, message us, or otherwise interact with us on social media platforms such as Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or Bluesky. The information we receive depends on the privacy settings you have set on those platforms.

(c) When you give permission to other organisations to share it, or it is publicly available
We may combine information you provide to us with information available from publicly available sources, or information you have permitted other organisations to share with us. We use this to better understand our supporters and improve our communications.

(d) When you visit our website

We use cookies and similar technologies to recognise your device when you visit our website and to understand how the site is being used. See Section 3 for details.

(e) When we believe you have a professional interest in our work

We may hold limited contact information about you if you are a journalist, public official, elected representative, or otherwise have a professional interest in the issues we work on. We may contact you about our work where we believe this is relevant to your professional duties. Our communications will always include a clear way to opt out.

2. Information we collect

We may collect, store and use the following kinds of personal data:

  • your name, email address, postal address, social media identifiers, telephone number, and any information that you provide for the purpose of subscribing to our communications or contacting us;

  • information about your device and your visits to our website, including IP address, approximate geographical location, browser type, referral source, length of visit and pages viewed;

  • information relating to any correspondence between you and us; and

  • any other information that you choose to send us.

Some categories of personal information are recognised by applicable law as "special category" data, including information about health, ethnicity, religion and political opinions. We do not routinely collect this kind of information. If we ever ask for it — for example, as part of a survey or research project — we will explain why, store it securely and separately from your identifying details, and only do so with your explicit consent.

3. How we use cookies

Our website uses cookies and similar technologies. A cookie is a small text file that is placed on your device when you visit a website. Cookies cannot be used to run programs or deliver viruses to your device.

We use cookies for two main purposes:

  • Essential cookies that are needed to make the website work, for example to remember your cookie preferences.

  • Analytics cookies that help us understand how the site is being used, so we can improve it. Where we use third-party analytics tools, statistical information is generated about website use which is stored by the relevant provider.

When you visit our website for the first time you will be shown a notice about our use of cookies. You can accept or decline non-essential cookies, and you can change your preferences at any time using your browser settings. Declining non-essential cookies will not prevent you from using the site.

Some social media platforms may also place cookies on your device when you view content embedded from those platforms, or interact with social sharing buttons.

4. How we use your personal data

Personal data submitted to us will be used for the purposes set out in this policy or made clear at the point of collection.

We may use your personal information to:

  • administer and improve our website;

  • send you email communications about our work, campaigns, events and opportunities to get involved, where you have given us your consent;

  • respond to enquiries and correspondence from you;

  • administer applications for employment or volunteering;

  • provide aggregated, anonymised statistics about our supporters to third parties — this information cannot be used to identify any individual;

  • handle complaints made by or about you; and

  • comply with our legal obligations.

We will not sell, rent or share your personal data with other organisations for their own marketing purposes

5. Children's data

We do not knowingly collect or process the personal data of anyone under the age of 13. If we discover or have reason to believe that we are holding personal information about a child under 13, we will delete it within a reasonable period.

6. Other disclosures

In addition to the disclosures reasonably necessary for the purposes identified elsewhere in this policy, we will disclose information about you only where we are required to do so by law, or where it is necessary to protect our rights, property or safety, or those of others.

We use a small number of trusted third-party service providers to help us deliver our work — for example, to send our emails, host our website, or process form submissions. These providers act as data processors on our behalf and are bound by contract to keep your data secure and to use it only for the purposes we specify.

7. Security of your personal data

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your personal information against loss, misuse, unauthorised access, disclosure or alteration.

Some of our service providers may store or process data outside the UK. Where this happens, we ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place — such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement, an Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, or transfers to countries the UK government has determined provide an adequate level of protection.

No method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your information using industry-standard practices.

8. Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have a number of rights in relation to your personal data, including:

  • the right to be informed about how we use your information (this notice is part of how we do that);

  • the right to access the personal information we hold about you;

  • the right to request that inaccurate information be corrected;

  • the right to request the restriction or deletion of your personal information;

  • the right to request your information in a portable, machine-readable format;

  • the right to object to processing, including direct marketing; and

  • the right not to be subject to solely automated decision-making that has legal or similarly significant effects.

If you wish to exercise any of these rights, please email us at info@thenewcontract.org. We will respond within one month. We may ask you to verify your identity before we provide any information.

There may be limited circumstances in which these rights do not apply. Further information about your rights, and how to make a complaint about how we handle your data, is available from the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

9. Lawful basis for processin

UK data protection law requires us to identify a lawful basis for processing your personal data. The bases we rely on are:

  • Consent — we will send you email about our work only where you have given us your consent, for example by signing up through a form on our website. You can withdraw your consent at any time.

  • Legitimate interests — we may rely on legitimate interests where it is reasonable to do so and your rights and interests do not override ours. For example, we may contact journalists, elected representatives and other public-facing professionals about our work where we believe this is relevant to their professional role.

  • Legal obligation — where we need to process your information to comply with a legal obligation.

10. Data retention

We will keep your personal information only for as long as is necessary for the purposes for which it was collected.

If you have asked to receive our emails, we will keep your contact information until you unsubscribe or otherwise ask us to stop contacting you. If you unsubscribe, we will keep a minimal record of your unsubscribe request so that we don't accidentally contact you again. We will delete personal data three years after your most recent interaction with us, unless we have a clear reason to keep it for longer.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time by posting a new version on our website. We encourage you to review it occasionally. Where changes are material, we will notify you by email or a prominent notice on our website.

12. Third-party websites

Our website and our emails may contain links to other websites. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those websites. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party sites you visit.

13. How to unsubscribe

You can unsubscribe from our emails at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in the footer of any email we send. You can also email us at info@thenewcontract.org to ask us to stop contacting you, or to remove your details from our records.

14. Contact us

We are not required by law to appoint a Data Protection Officer. If you have any questions about this privacy policy or about how we handle your personal data, please contact us by email at info@thenewcontract.org.
